How to remove 'Badmonday' from Mac?What is 'Badmonday'?
Badmonday is a family of deceptive/scam websites, which operate by using scare-tactics to trick users into installing untrustworthy applications. This variation promotes Smart Mac Booster, classified as a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application). Badmonday warns visitors of viruses it has detected on their MacOS (Mac Operating System) and offers Smart Mac Booster for their removal. It must be emphasized, that no webpage can detect threats/issues on devices. Therefore, any problem alerts displayed by such sites are fake. Websites showing messages of this sort are not to be trusted and software advertised on them must never be downloaded/installed. It is highly likely that any applications endorsed by deceptive pages are fraudulent and nonfunctional. Most visitors to Badmonday, access it inadvertently; they get redirected by PUAs already present on the system. The division what is better dps or dmg in games.
The first thing visitors to Badmonday see is a pop-up window. The message in the window claims that a website the users have visited on this day infected their MacOS with a virus. Mac os x 10.7 mountain lion free download full version. Once this window is closed another page is displayed. Said page repeats the initial claim and adds that a full system scan is necessary to find and eliminate the dangerous applications/files. To further the impression of legitimacy, there are device details listed (brand, OS version, browser, IP address, Internet provider and location). Pressing 'Scan Now' initiates a fake scan, which finds a virus called 'Bankworm'. Badmonday recommends Advanced Mac Cleaner, as an app for the removal of 'Bankworm'. However, the 'REMOVE VIRUS NOW' button leads users to the download site of Smart Mac Booster PUA. From its download process originates the maccleaner.pkg file that is known to be used for spreading unwanted applications. Apps like Smart Mac Booster (e.g. MacCleansePro, K9-MacOptimizer, Mac Fixer Pro and many others) often require activation to become operational (i.e. they need to be purchased). However, despite being bought, they rarely begin working as advertised and in most cases - remain nonoperational. It is strongly advised against downloading/installing maccleaner.pkg and Smart Mac Booster, as well as any similarly suspect content.
PUAs tend to look legitimate and they tempt users into installation by offering a wide variety of features. However, usually all of their features are nonfunctional. The only goal of these applications is to generate profit for their developers; to users they have no real value. PUAs cause various nuisances and pose a threat to device/user safety. They are designed to force-open sale-oriented, untrustworthy, compromised, deceptive/scam and even malicious websites. Unwanted apps can also run intrusive advertisement campaigns (pop-ups, banners, surveys, etc.) and hijack browsers. Some have data tracking abilities as well. They record browsing activity (browsing and search engine histories) and gather users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and real-life personal details). This sensitive data is then shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals), intent on misemploying for financial gain. To summarize, PUAs can not only cause browser/system infiltrations and infections, but also lead to severe privacy issues, financial losses and even identity theft. To protect themselves from these risks, users are advised to remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.
Scam websites are not uncommon, most of them share certain traits. Firdayfun, Wenfuntoday, Funnytues are but a few examples of deceptive webpage families identical to Badmonday. These sites typically use a variety of scare-tactics to trick users into downloading/installing and/or purchasing the software they advertise. Usually, the promoted applications are illegitimate and nonfunctional. Scam websites are mostly entered through redirects generated by PUAs or by intrusive advertisements.
How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?
The main mode of PUA proliferation is via download/install setups of other software. 'Bundling' is a term used to describe this false marketing method of packing regular products with unwanted content. Rushed download/installation processes (e.g. ignored terms, skipped steps, etc.) - increase the risk of potential system infiltrations and infections. Select apps of this kind also possess 'official' download webpages (e.g. Smart Mac Booster). Intrusive adverts are also known to spread PUAs. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install such applications without user permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Users should always research wanted content, before downloading/installing it. It is recommended to only use trustworthy and verified download channels. Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.), unofficial and free file-hosting sites, third party downloaders and similar sources - are considered to be untrustworthy, hence are advised against use. Download and installation processes are to be treated with care. Therefore, users should read terms, explore all possible options, use the 'Custom/Advanced' settings and opt-out from downloading/installing supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Despite being commonly hosted by compromised webpages, intrusive advertisements appear legitimate and harmless themselves. However, these ads redirect to questionable websites (e.g. pornography, adult-dating, gambling and others). Should users experience adverts/redirects of this type, they are strongly urged to inspect the device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan withCombo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
